The Essential Woman

Since taking my first Leica workshop, my relationship with photography has rapidly evolved. The “Nude in the Landscape” experience helped me internalize that photography is so much more than camera settings, lighting, and equipment. At its pinnacle, photography captures more than what’s visible to our eyes. Images can convey movement and emotions, evoke feelings hidden deep in us, rock us to our core.

Professionally, I have been fortunate to not only work with, but, more importantly, connect with many incredible women who are dynamic, intelligent, complex, and strong. Constantly in motion, they are “never twice the same.” Their strength will lead, their vulnerability will heal, their compassion will move. I find meaning in helping shine a spotlight on them.

Personally, Sage and Mark have taken me on an exciting journey where I have been able to meet extraordinary women. This journey isn’t about finding what I love about photography, it’s about learning what I love through photography. As Franca Sozzani learned with Paolo Roversi: “It wasn't her hair, her eyes, or even what she was wearing. It was the woman herself: the essential woman. The way she looks, the way she moves, the way of expressing herself. We are captivated by what she means to us.”

The essential women in Mark DePaola’s images beguiled me since my introduction to Mark’s work.

My photographic journey has been an opportunity to chase my curiosity in search for what spurs an emotional response, cast away superficial fears created by society, and simply give into the impulse to press the shutter button. I want to use photography as a stage to propagate all that is captivating about women. I want to take unforgettable photographs that inspire, images that challenge, art that conveys the power of women.
